Akademiks Admits Meek Is Making Amazing Music (& Drake vs Weeknd)

What’s poppin y’all,

I never thought I'd see the day, but DJ Akademiks has actually admitted that Meek Mill is making great rap music right now. If you’ve been paying attention, you know these two have had a long-standing beef, constantly taking shots at each other. So for Ak to admit this? That’s a big deal. And it reinforces a key point I’ve been working on for an upcoming video.

This one won’t be dropping for a month or two—I’m still fleshing out the outline—but it’s going to be a raw think piece. Not packed with clips or deep history breakdowns like some of my recent videos. For example, my Gimmick Rappers video was a hybrid—it had elements of a think piece, but this one will be even more stripped-down.

The point I’m making? Music quality alone doesn’t dictate an artist’s success. If even Akademiks can admit that Meek is doing some of the best rapping of his career, but Meek isn’t at the top of the game right now, then clearly, other factors are at play.

Drake vs. The Weeknd: Who’s Really Winning?

That brings me to Drake and this whole “Drake was suppressed” narrative. Some people are still running with that, but even Akademiks admitted that it’s not true.

Drake’s album with PartyNextDoor pulled 287 million first-week streams, surpassing The Weeknd’s 171 million. Yet, The Weeknd sold nearly 500K total copies, while Drake only moved 246K when including physical sales.

Here’s where it gets interesting:

  • Drake outstreamed The Weeknd by over 100 million, but The Weeknd’s total sales were nearly double Drake’s.

  • Both artists are on Republic Records. No favoritism, no “suppression” conspiracy—if anything, Republic would want The Weeknd to succeed just as much, if not more.

  • So why does it feel like no one is talking about The Weeknd’s album? It’s barely making rounds in discussion, even less than Dawn FM, which is surprising.

I don’t know if it’s because Timeless is still dominating, but the rollout and conversation around this project feel muted. I’m also interested to see how it holds up compared to Chromakopia, Tyler, the Creator’s latest album, which people are still playing heavily.

More Videos Coming Weekly

No song of the day today—I spent yesterday writing a lot, which means more videos coming soon. Expect weekly uploads on the main channel, right on schedule.

More to come.
