Tory Lanez Isn't Wasting ANY Time

What’s poppin y’all,

It looks like Tory Lanez is actually preparing to release an album while serving time. He recently revealed the album cover and title—Peterson, named after his last name—which serves as a direct follow-up to Daystar. The title makes sense because Daystar was the first time he publicly spoke after the shooting, where he boldly claimed his innocence and pushed back against overwhelming backlash. It was a defining moment in history, as people came at him hard, but he stood his ground. Now, with Peterson coming from behind bars, this project is bound to carry a lot of reflection, showing how he felt during Daystar, despite still maintaining his innocence.

What makes this release interesting isn’t the sales numbers. Tory is independent, in prison, and has no industry support. There’s no label machine pushing the album, no playlisting advantages, and no major marketing campaign. But despite all of that, his core fan base and hip-hop listeners are still tuned in to whatever he has to say musically. Between 2020 and his sentencing in 2023, he delivered some of the best music of his career—arguably some of the best music we’d heard in years—which solidified him as someone people want to keep hearing from.

At the same time, Tory Lanez remains closely tied to Megan Thee Stallion’s career. While she’s doing well, there hasn’t been as much discussion around her lately. Meanwhile, newer artists like Doechii are stepping into the spotlight as the next big thing in female rap. It’ll be interesting to see how Peterson is received, both in terms of music and cultural impact, and whether Tory’s voice still holds the influence it once did.
