The Rapper We Forgot Metro Boomin Signed

Doechii’s Album, Kendrick’s Super Bowl Setlist & A Surprise Music Discovery

What’s poppin y’all,

Had a fun stream yesterday, where I checked out Doechii’s Alligator Bites Never Heal album for the first time. I also talked about the Kendrick Lamar Super Bowl setlist leak, but I’ve already covered that with you guys.

First Time Listening to Doechii

This was my first time ever listening to Doechii. I knew she was on TDE, but I had no idea about her art, style, or influences. I went into this album completely blind, listening top to bottom before getting hit with copyright around track 17.

Even though I personally would have given the Grammy to Future & Metro Boomin over her, I understand why the Grammys chose her. This is a really good album. It’s cohesive, despite almost every song sounding different. She’s demonstrating so many different flows, and the versatility is undeniable.

Favorite Tracks

  • Denial is a River – One of my favorites

  • Slide – This track stood out the most to me

  • Nissan Ultima – Feels like the hit off the album

  • Bullfrog – Another standout

Some people are trying to say she’s copying different inspirations, but let’s be real—everyone is a blend of who they learned from. She’s carving her own lane, and it reminds me of how people compared Tyler, the Creator to Eminem early in his career, until he fully came into his own.

Discovering New Songs

While streaming, we ended up going down a rabbit hole about artists who were signed to producers.

  • Chavo – Coi Leray’s brother, signed to Pi’erre Bourne (not sure if he still is).

  • SwaVay – The first artist signed to Metro Boomin’s Boominati label.

I hadn’t heard from SwaVay in years—I remember his 2AM song and his Pure Infinity album. There was also B4DALBUM, but after that, he kind of disappeared.

I decided to check up on him live on stream and found a song from his Billy EP called All My Friends. Surprisingly, he signed to Def Jam, but this track completely threw me off. It’s not a country song, but it has country elements, with great songwriting and singing. The switch-up from his earlier rap stuff was unexpected but fire.

Song of the Day

SwaVay – All My Friends (Billy EP)

I’m not doing a song of the day every day, but when I find something new or interesting, I’ll share it here. This was one of those accidental discoveries that made the stream even better.
